Hurray for Sylvia!

When common Singaporeans ask questions of the state of affairs in Singapore, ministers tell us to just shut up and join a political party before we speak.

When Workers' Party MP Sylvia Lim questioned the Minister of Law how he viewed the disquiet over the non-custodial sentence for plastic surgeon, Shanmugum turned the table on her and asked  three times if she is insinuating that the AG Chamber is favouring Woffles Wu with non-custodial charges. [Link]. She was accused of being political.

What now? Commoners cannot, politicians also cannot. Nobody can ask questions, meh?

If only Sylvia Lim were Reuben Wang, she may have used expletives to answer the Law Minister. Who can forget what young Reuben did when the annoying Deputy Minister answered one question after another with "What do you think? What do you think? What do you think?"

The same overused PAP trick of replying a question with a question is not working anymore. The bullying 'lawyer burok' trick of intimidation to belittle an opponent is no longer working the way the 'hatchet-man' did. It now has backfired because Singaporeans are not as 'daft" as he thought!

My heartfelt respect for Sylvia Lim began when I watched this 9.42 minutes video years ago.

Her ability to tell the hard truth to make self-serving PAP ministers cringe is history making! , Her telling us of ministers making a mockery of national service by paying themselves millions at the expense of taxpayers money is brutally raw. The value in bold honesty is worthy of making this video compulsory viewing for students attending civic classes in all schools in Singapore. It'll teach them courage and help them fight for their rights and not be intimidated by self-serving overpaid bullies!

Apart for the benefit of MOE, it is also useful material for Ministry of Defence to teach our soldiers the meaning of true grit!

I'm so proud of Sylvia Lim for her latest gift to us all in questioning the Law Minister on an issue of fairness and equality that many citizens are confused by.

Her ability to stand tall and not be intimidated by the power that is bodes well for the future of Singapore. Hopefully, it is the beginning of a cultural change where we can witness the decline of  Kiasi (fear death), Kiasu (fear loss) and Kia Chenghu (fear government) in Singapore.

How on earth Woffle Wu, the owner of the speeding cars, did not respond to the police demand for the details of the drivers is beyond us. For the police to accept the answer from Wu's employee to the questions by the police shows the quality of the investigation and the case of the prosecution.

Again we move on . . . with no allegation but much disquiet till the next General Election where we can exercise our discretion properly.

He is “glad” no allegations have been made against the AGC? Ask Alex Au of yawning bread! Shanmugum is basically bragging that no one dares to make any new allegations against the AGC. The Emperor has no clothes!

The new National CON-versation is just that, a smoke and mirror ploy.

Mr Fish,
no wonder nobody is taking responsible for billions dollars loss for bad investment in financial loss chart up by TH & GIC because the snake could be asking the same question to move on . They really think we lesser mortals are ready stupid by their "head they win, tail they also win" devious logic.

Apart from this, may I ask why that the judge sentence those so-called offenders who claim that they have no idea that the girl is not of legal age to have sex because they have confirmed with the pimp, and yet the the judge say that they should be responsible because they did not take due negligence to ensure that. Now we have this case that the police did not perform due negligence but rather just take answer lightly at face-value of those they investigated, why didn't the judge sentence the police over that ? Didn't it show double-standard when it comes to handle lesser mortals ?

It is this type of questions, that the Opposition need to ask and not those long winded questions about the system.

Questions like how the retrenched PMET are being re-employed, prices of HDB flats etc...

I bet this SHAM bugger won't bark so much if he had to contest in a SMC, and for sure he will lose, even in the Serangoon area.
Screw him!

Minister Shanmugan has made great sacrifice to be a Cabinet Member. For his calibre, he certainly can make many times theincome he is paid now.
Money wont be an issue for his calibre. His greatest sacrifice is the freedom to enjoy life that high flyers do. Can You imagine the discipline required of a minister and that of their family members? No fooling around anymore, ok?

Please appreciate the great sacrifices our parliamentarians are making.

Minister Shan could have millions and more...all true....

But he made a choice - presumedly it was a free choice based on selfish assessment and personal needs - he must have concluded on the balance, the pension, free healthcare and power social status was worth the "risk" instead of continuing in private practice where professional liability is always around the corner.

You can see now that more opposition MPs in Parliament does make bigger differences.

Never underestimate small steps. It will lead to bigger things.

Little drops of water and little grains of sand, makes the mighty ocean and the pleasant land.

Is minister Shan insinuating that MP Sylvia Lim insinuates AGC???
anon@12:09
I think the sacrifice MP Sylvia makes is of much greater significance and greater cause than that of MP Shan.
She made a choice, Justice, Equality, Happiness, Prosperity and Progress of Singapore is worth it, not the $$$.

@ anon 12.09pm,
a man with calibre will not want to be the stooge of another, even an emperor.
a man with calibre is not afraid to tell his emperor he is naked, or at least say the policies are daft.
if there had been men of calibre working for the emperor and son instead of stooges, majority of sporeans won't be hurt by their policies.

it seems to you, sacrifice opportunity to make more money, sacrifice one's private life, losing the freedom to enjoy life, can be deemed as having calibre ?

what about whether the person has IQ plus EQ, integrity, sense of fairplay, honour, pride, guts, etc ?

by the way, the so called "great sacrifices" our parliamentarians are making becomes meaningless if they have none of the above, right?

hence, can i say you see calibre but i see stooges ?
what do you think?

Shanmugam also used similar outdated tactic to defend Straits Times for not being biased and make Pritam swear it in parliament. I am beginning to see the rotten side of PAP coming to lights on top of the questionable procurements Stat Board have been exploiting in favour of the elites.

One word to describe PAP is "SICK!!!" to the core. No wonder they kept making citizens paid through our noise as money is never enough to be exploited and gambled away for bad investments.

Is there a need for our Sham Law Minister to behave so arrogant in Parliament answering to some questions raised by an elected representative of the people ?

Will his utter display of sheer arrogance not make an insincere fool out of our PM who had to desperately made an unprecedented apology to the people prior to the last GE ?

So is it not back to square one now that PAP is as arrogant as ever ? Any more further apology the next time round will be viewed with more sceptism, isn't it ?

First of all we must be 'immune' against State's brain washing in their media- TV channels 5,8, SURIA, VASANTHAM, CNA and of course all local newspapers;

and also guard against propaganda in schools and other channels like rc and in some shopping malls exhibitions and hosting of pap-controlled rc activities or event disguised as commercial but political.

We need to advise our younger ones against such political education whether it is simply watching a tv programs on channel 8 or suria ..

Even at the CNY event, crowds are forced to watch the RC documentary and lengthy award ceremony of RC members for about 30 mins before letting off the firecrackers.

We MUST caution our young ones against such indoctrination.

Only then our next generation can be independent thinker which is crucial for Sg healthy political development.

Our parliament need many more of such good legislators in the opposition.

This law minister very touchy, likes to send lawyers letters. He is looking for Scroobal who said he had an affair. He sent lawyers letters to Alex Au to retract his blog on the Woffles case. And now he intimidates Sylvia Lim in Parliament.

Obviously the AGC holds too much discretionary powers. Even Justice Rajah said about the AGC: "Is it proper prosecutorial discretion to salami slice the physical evidence?"

Go Sylvia! Don't succumb to threats and intimidations from bullies. They won't be around forever.

The six cases cited merely provide precedents to support the $1,000 fine. The Court will pass its sentence based on the charges filed. The more pertinent issue that was not addressed is why was the doctor not charged under the Penal Code Sect 182? Would the outcome be different? The public deserves to be enlightened.

Having seen the above video, I say again, "Hurray for Sylvia!"

Talking about innuendos and insults from 'loyar burok', viewers can see for themselves the typical "answering a question with a question" 'elak' (or siam or dodge) trick done with the usual intimidating arrogance!

As expected, the question asked by Sylvia was not answered. Instead her professional ethics and skills, not only as a lawyer but as a MP, was being questioned.

Isn't it funny that it was employee Kuan not Boss Woffle who replied to the police when the police asked for the details of the driver of the speeding car. How could the police accept that? I thought it's standard procedure that only the owner of the car answers such questions. Or am I wrong here?

This video also shows the quality of the performance of the Speaker of the house.

My sincere appreciation to Sylvia for asking the question on behalf of many concern SIngaporeans who were disquieted by the Woffle's case.

I now hope a MP will ask about the ducky affair of the water taxi which seems to have more spice than "BromptonGate"

At August 17, 2012 at 11:07 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

It turns out that the police know Woffles drove the car on both occasions. So He was the one who hatched the scheme to deceive the police by having his employee Kuan lie and admit to be the driver. How then can he be abetting Kuan, it should be the other way around.

"We are a city. We are not a country", when the law minister tried to explain the dominance of the PAP. And in the same interview he says "We are a country in the legal sense". So what are we, Law Minister? A Rojak - which it bloody well is now? It seems confusion and obfuscation are forte of lawyers.

All I see is that PAP is not attracting enough talent into its fold. Look around and you will find most of the ministers come from civil service, army, navy and GLC. These are all trained as Yes men. Good when in good time but of concern when things are not measuring up. See what happens to LTA? It seems clueless on how to solve the MRT problems. Now we have another general in SMRT, let see if things get better.
