Singaporeans, We Must Have The Courage To Change

With the heat emanating in Punggol East, you will notice the above monstrosity at the junction of Sengkang East Way and Sengkang East Drive. If my memory serves me well, the banner had the picture of Michael Palmer instead of the above before he resigned.

Questions:
  1. Does this location in front of Block 160 carpark (junction of Sengkang East Way and Sengkang East Drive) belong to the constituency of Punggol East SMC? If it is, why are the pictures of the MPs of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC staring at us?
  2. If it is in the constituency of Punggol East, what right does PAP have to display this banner?
  3. Who pays for the banner?
  4. Which government department/ institution allows such banners to be displayed?
  5. Why do I see faces of only PAP's MPs pictures in such banners all over Singapore?
  6. Why do I not see faces of WP's MPs pictures in Hougang or Aljunied?
Fair is fair. If the location is in the electoral boundary of Punggol East, I would think that someone has illegally abused his/her power to benefit PAP for cheap advertisement and self-aggrandisement. So does this location belong to Pasir Ris-Punggol or Punggol East?

Funny. Though many uncouth Singaporean bitch much about the inefficiency (corrupted, slow, dirty, etc.) of countries they visit, most Singkies do not give much fook to the dirt (unfairness, inequality, injustice, lack of real democracy) practiced by their own countrymen in their own country.

So what does it take to change the essence of a man? The essence of Singaporeans?

What does it take for Singaporeans to realise:
  1. The only fear to fear is fear itself
  2. LKY is not God and all that come from PAP are not gospel truths
  3. We are too old to die young but our descendants are not. If we do not have enough alternative voices and strength in parliament to mitigate the harm being done to Singapore, it is not us but our children and our children's children who will pay the price and suffer
  4. The arrogance, callousness and hubris of "PAP Knows Best" are the roots of many evils manifesting Singapore now.
  5. The rubbish of Singapore being 1st World is a damned lie.
  6. The fact that Singapore is the only country where old folks in their 60's. 70's and even 80's need to work as cleaners in hawkers centres and have to pick paper cartons and aluminium cans in rubbish dumps to survive is a sad truth for all to see. It is a fookin' shame that my friends from Burma and PRC are telling me how screwed up Singapore is because such shame is rarely seen in their countries!
  7. The disparagement and derogation Singaporeans had of Philippines (Marcos era), Indonesia (Suharto and even Soekarno era) and other neighbours is coming to visit and bite us now. We used to speak of the corruption of such nations not knowing that we may be paying the same price now albeit in a more leegalise way. Atrocious salaries for ministers who failed and retired with pensions. Incoming ministers with such sense of granduer that they feel and commented that the obscene salaries they receive is insufficient to pay for their family time they sacrifice to serve the people! AIMgate.

Is it payback time for Singaporeans for the sins they committed in despising and looking down on others?
I'm not sure if it was written in "Beyond the Blue Gate" by Teo Soh Lung or another book by another Singapore political prisoner that in ISD interrogations, officers threatened that "accidents can happen" to those who do not toe the line.

Being a blogger telling it like it is, I have been advised by those who love and care for me to be careful. I have been often warned to do no harm to those so powerful who can easily harm me. I write from my damaged heart sharing my perception of the things I see that does not resonate well for my country. If the powerful feel slighted by my perception and accident happens, it happens.

I'm already too old to die young.

Now let's hear the people sing!

With optimism in my damaged heart and for the good of my children and grandchildren, let's look forward to an encore in the early morning of 27 Jan 2013!

Mr Fish, be careful or else you will be stripped bare of your flesh and served to a family of 7 people with porridge and soya sauce.

A kuning is enough for them all.

'Too old to die young'.
Well said Fish and this is something the youngish Singaporeans are mostly afraid of. So are their elders. The youngs are afraid that active participation in the State Affair may land them in trouble. Personally, me find them excusable though it does show their lacks of courage, ideal and even foresight of how their own successors will live in future.

Me just send off an elderly lady recently to the Mandai Crematorium who was my nejghbour in the Village where we stayed at the Present Newater Plant at Koh Sek Lim Road. The Villagers were resettled from the 70s.

Said Lady was of my 97 year old surviving mother's' generation. In the 50 to the Late 60s, most of the younger folks then were involved with politics in one form or another. There were the very touching call for independence that pulled at the heart string of the mostly idealistic youngs. The aspiring politicians then led by people liked David Marshall, Lim Chin Siong & Co which Included Lee Kuan Yew and his many buddies who were mostly made ministers when he became the First PM Of Sin.
Politic was very much in a frenzy in the Whole of the 60s with the Merger with Malaya as one of the most controversial
issue. The population was mostly against the Merger, however the then PM Lee Kuan Yew and his Cabinet was hell bent on it.

There were much demonstrations throughout the Island to oppose the Merger. Though me was just a young boy, I was very much enjoying with the crowds and the activities. There were also the Racial Riots in the 60s that got everybody of all ages involved. Sometime and somewhere within the Period, the Rulerd decided to close down the Only Chinese Language Tertiary Institution in the History Of Sin, the NANTAH UNIVERSITY. That added much fuel to the then existing rift between Lee Kuan Yew and the Mostly Chinese Populace.

Fish, I have upmost respect & admiration for your writings. They are all masterpieces, saying things as it is, and with such clarity, despite having "only" O Levels. The quality of your analysis & your English will put many PHDs to shame. I consider your blog as a "must read". Continue the great work & I hope the younger generation & particularly the voters of PE will learn from your works. Hormat Senjata !

Agree.
Those posters are a monstrosity.

Where is the money coming from to pay for such posters?
Town Councils?

Where is the money for the posters going to?
$2 companies that supplied the posters?

TEO. Can you enlighten us?

Well said, Fish, well said....

Singaporean complain about almost everything, some even take the trouble to make known their unhappiness via MSM but when it comes to bullies (openly and obvious and unreasonable) from you know who, they just keep quiet, worst thing when come to election, they conveniently put a cross against the lighting, after that, they start complain again and again over almost everything. They just know how to complain but have no courage to make a change to improve their lives. My fellow Singaporeans, if you are reading this, WE MUST HAVE THE COURAGE TO CHANGE.

Fish, you got it wrong. They are dress up in SDP colours. The banner was to encourage SDP to contest the PE BE.

Looks like SDP's alternative policies are infiltrating into the whiter than white party. LOL!

Our fren Fish is getting worked up and losing his nerves. Pls tell him to relax. It's not good for his heart. If he wants to see real changes, he must take care of his heart first!

Though industrial activities and actions by workers themselves or with unions under the British Rule were quite frequent, few had resulted in violence. Except for the Hock Lee Bus Workers strike and demonstration and the Racial Riots, there was no other casualty.

Political activities were and are civil and peaceful. However, from the 50s, much of the Chinese Populace who were active in local politics were left leaning. They were outlawed when Singapore became independent. Many were rounded up and those at leadership level were either asked to denounce their affiliation to Communist Ideology or be detained and jailed.

In the Village where me stayed, there were many followers and a few leaders active in
propagating the egalitarian virtue of communism though none were full fledged communist as the communist system did not exist. When the crackdown started, all those with paraphernalias of Marx, Lenin, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other communist leaders were all alarmed. Many who had Mao cap, Red booklet of Mao Thoughts, recordings(cassette/tapes and film) either destroyed them or hid them. I must say that while me was in their company, I had never seen them in possession of any weapon for militant activity. Though there were talk of them going to Malaya and China to learn more about Communism and to join the communist, none that I have got to know was militant.

Amongst the many activists was a son of the Old Lady who me mentioned in my First Comment. He was a more senior member and in his mid twenties. One night, he told his family and the few neighbours in their house that he had to leave home to join a few others to an unknown place. They not only wanted to avoid arrest, they wanted to further their ideal at safer place. That was the Last time we got to see him 5 decades ago.

Ad close neighbours, my family and his family visited each others almost daily after that for some years. There was news of him disclosed and his family members were always in tear if he got mentioned. By the time we were resettled in the 70s, there was no news of him. There were other members in the neighbourhood that were jailed.

After we moved into Public Housing in different estates, there was no visit except occasional meetings.

At the wake and funeral of the Said neighbour, the Son was not present. She and the family must have missed him dearly all these years.

Dear Patriot,

Thank you for sharing.

Since the 50's till now, one wonders how many were incarcerated, tortured or made to disappear?

Chia Thye Poh, Dr Lim Hock Siew, Said Zahari, Poh Soo Kai & Co (in the 60's) Fransis Khoo & Co (in the 70's) Vincent Cheng, Teo So Lung & Co (in the 80's) may just be only the tip of the iceberg.

Who knows?

Thanks to books like "Fajar Generation"; "Beyond the Bue Gates", Escape from the Lion's Paws", "Democratically Speaking" etc., we are able to able to learn some of the filth that is.

Again, I'm sure readers here appreciate your sharing.

Thank you

Hi Fish and All:

With the Internet, me got to know and interact with many like minded Fellow Countrymen. I have always enjoy the Company and feel thankful for the opportunity to interact and learn.

Have met up with some bloggers and also met others at Speaker Corner(Hong Lim Park). Time with them were meaningful and well spent.

Personally, me feels that it will be good if think alike netizens network beyond the (electronic) box.

Presently, me am fully occupied looking after my elderly mother, hence got very little time to meet up. Do wish some of You could get connected as those that me had met, did wish they can meet up occasionally and like to have You(Fish) around.

Thank You All.
